McLean's/Elloitt/New Connexion Methodist Cemetery

McLean's Elliott New Connexion Methodist Cemetery is a small abandoned cemetery in Kendal, Hope Township Ontario. It is located on The Dell Rd, right where it meets up with Thompson Rd. There are approximately 50 people buried here, and the first burial was in 1861. This cemetery sits on a hill, and some areas of the cemetery are a bit steep, so make sure you are wearing proper footwear for exploring. When you walk through the front gates you'll set a very rough set of stone stairs in the hill, though they are still useable you are probably just as safe walking up the grass.

This place was named after the Elliott family, who donated the land to the New Connexion Methodist Church (Kendal's first church), and their neighbours the McLeans. One of the McLeans grandsons, James Stanley McLean, was the founder of the Canada Packers Company. You can see a few names of the original settlers from the town on some of the monuments, Carscadden for one, but many of the monuments are very badly worn down or broken.
Speaking of the front gate, that's it! Also, it is the original gate, with the original cross from 1861. The gate is held closed with a dog chain right now.

And a shot of the very, very old and very, very rustic steps leading to the McLeans plot. They are pretty useless now, but they add nicely to the scenery of the cemetery.
