Salem Cemetery

There are many, many cemeteries with the name "Salem Cemetery". This post is about the little Salem Cemetery at the back of the Salem United Church in Bowmanville. This is not the "haunted" Salem Cemetery in Oshawa.

Located on Concession 4, between Liberty St and Middle Rd sits this little, unexpected church. It is still active and well maintained, and there is a lot of parking available. I parked in the east lot, and I pulled in right in front of the tiny cemetery.

Three monuments, broken long ago and mounted onto a concrete slab. They are located behind the church, beside some outbuildings and sheds.

William, died May 16, aged 28 years.
Mary Grace, their daughter, died March 31, 1851. Aged 3 years.

Son of Mary Lux, died March 11, 1871. Aged 25 years.

I think there are 3 people listed here, but I can only make out 2 names, and even they are rough guesses. The first name I can't read, it's where the break is, and then I believe it lists the parents, but I can't read their names either.
The second name might be Lilly/Lillith or Lulu. Died in 1858, aged 19 years.
The third name looks like Ephraim, her son. Aged 8 days.

Rehoboth Cemetery

Now for one of the smallest cemeteries on this blog, we find the Rehoboth Cemetery. One monument, two names, and no information.

This site is located on the corner of Concession 3 and Providence Road in Clarington, Ontario. It's a cosy country road with some homes surrounding, but you won't miss the site easily.

Sadly, the lone stone is broken, and though I can read the first names I can't make out the last name with 100% confidence.

William, died May 22, 1877. Aged 71 years.
Mary, his wife, died Oct 19, 1874.

To my eyes, the last name appears to be Donnely/Donnley/Donelly. I can't find any information to back that up though. The footstone does have the initials M.D., so it's definitely a "D" last name.

I have seen this site listed as "Rehobeth" rather than Rehoboth, but as you can see from the first picture, the Rehoboth spelling is correct. I have no idea what that name means. It apparently used to be called Primitive Methodist Cemetery.

1818 Lee Cemetery

I have been anxiously awaiting my next trip to the north end of Peterborough! I hardly ever go up there, but I had to make the trip today, so I packed up my gear, my dogs, and my big rubber boots and headed out to look for a cemetery that might or might not exist.

The 1818 Lee Cemetery was located on the back of a farm property, which has since been demolished and the property now has a large walking path running through it. Chemong Rd is now a busy place with a huge amount of commercial properties and suburban sprawl everywhere. Unfortunately, because of that, this cemetery has seen a lot of damage and vandalism.

The Lee family settled in Peterborough in the 1810-1820's, meaning that this cemetery is nearly two centuries old. I walked up and down the path, going through the bushes and footpaths in the grass, hoping I would find this place. Turns out I missed it right when I walked in.

Can you see it? Let's look closer.

Yup, a cross in a tree. It was originally planted in the ground, but knocked over in a storm a few years ago. I walked all around the area, hoping to find some monuments left, but nothing seems to remain, other than a partial fence that used to enclose the cemetery. Also, a bunch of trash and broken paving stones.

At one point there used to be 2 or 3 graves here, one for John Lee and another for his son, Thomas Lee. Apparently, there was possibly a third grave for a young child possibly named Smithson. The area has a lot of plant cover, so watch your step and try not to trip over the vines and branches!

Port Hope Pioneer Presbyterian Cemetery

The Port Hope Pioneer Presbyterian Cemetery

1827-1873

Dedicated to the memory of over 60 members of First Presbyterian Church buried here. A small frame church completed in 1831 on the hill above facing Baldwin Street was replaced by a large brick church in 1854. These early settlers contributed much to the development of the community by their ideals of industry, piety and charity.

The Port Hope Pioneer Cemetery is located at 69 Bruton St in Port Hope. As you can see in the picture below, it is quite hidden at the top of a small hill on a residential street, and other than the sign at the cemetery there are no signs telling you that this place exists, which there should be if it's a heritage site. I would be willing to bet that a good amount of Port Hope citizens don't even know this place exists.

Nearly 30 years ago it would have been even easier to miss. Overgrown by weeds, vandalized and deserted, this cemetery was lovingly restored in 1987 by the current Saint Pauls Presbyterian Church. The original church still exists, though it has been converted into a duplex, and is located on Baldwin and Church St.

This cemetery consists of a brick cairn, as well as a few of the original standing monuments. There has been a set of stairs built into the hill, and the sides of the stairs have been decorated using the broken monuments that could not be fixed. It's a very neat decision, as often times the little unplaceable chunks are just added to the cairn, needlessly.

This site is well cared for, but it definitely has an old feel to it. You'll notice many signs regarding being respectful/not playing in the cemetery...I guess this must have been an issue at some point. When I was there I didn't notice any vandalism, but there was a dead bird and a few empty alcohol bottles littering the grounds.

"Eldest son of Dr John and Mary Ann; died as a result of a very sad accident. He had left his home on Walton Street to retrieve something from the Presbyterian Church on Baldwin Street. A friend happened to pass the rear of the church, saw a ladder to one of the windows and the form at the top was that of James hanging from the window which had fallen upon him as he attempted to enter".

St. Peter's Church Cemetery, Cobourg

 Did you know that there is a little abandoned cemetery right on the main street of Cobourg? I didn't either, at least until I happened to spot a small monument from the road. There are no signs noting that the cemetery is there, and no mention of the cemetery of it's people on this historical placque. The cemetery is located on the grounds of the very large, and very beautiful St Peter's Church, and the grounds are very well taken care of, but many of the stones seem to be disappearing into the ground.
