White/Porter Cemetery

White/Porter Cemetery is located on 4308 Concession 5, Clarington. It is at the bottom of a hill, and the only parking is on the road, so be careful. Cars come flying passed. From the road, there isn't much to see, and if it wasn't for the sign you probably wouldn't even know that a cemetery was here. It sits upon a hill, tucked into the corner of the lot.

White/Porter Cemetery is also known as White Church Cemetery, Porter Old Kirk Cemetery and White Old Kirk Cemetery.
The majority of the monuments are set into a cairn, and they are, unfortunately, highly weather worn. There are 3 standing monuments at the back of the cairn and another one that is broken and off to the right of the cairn, hidden in the bushes or you to trip over and break your leg. Also, watch out for poison ivy and poison mosquitos. Or just big ones.

Note: When looking up this cemetery online many resources will tell you it's on Concession 4, but it isn't. It is on Concession 5, and it is located between Shiloh Cemetery (to the East) and Lawrence/Waddell Cemetery (to the West).

Shiloh Cemetery

Shiloh Cemetery is located on the corner of Concession Rd 5 and Shiloh Road, in a very small area of Clarington known as Starkville. It sits somewhere between Orono and Newtonville. The cemetery is also known as Shiloh United Cemetery or Shiloh Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery. The cemetery is located on the same land as the Shiloh United Church, which was built in 1861. I have found conflicting accounts as to whether or not the church is still active, but it is well maintained and while it may not be used for regular services it is probably at least used for community events. So urban explorers-don't go breaking in!
Also, the cemetery and church are in an area with several homes, so please be respectful. Several of the monuments actually back right onto someones front yard, almost into their driveway.
 Thomas Rae
Mary A. Humpoe, died Sept 23, 1854.
Unfortunately, most of what has been etched into these monuments are too worn to read.

A footstone with the initials T.J.D. and J.H.D., their monument is a little further down, so I think the footer has been moved.

Charles Hallowell, born Aug 21, 1832. Died June 3, 1867.
 Unknown.
Benjamin F. Olin, died March 2, 1880. Aged 39 years.
I can't quite make the name out on this one due to that one stupid leaf.
Zaltha A., daughter of William Orange? Died Sept 27, 1863. Aged 1 year.
Two children of G.W. and R. Soper.
Francis Elmer, Oct 1867. Aged 10 months.
George Elwood, dates unknown.

If you are out and about, doing some kick-butt cemetery hunting (I can't be the only one, can I?) this is a great drive. Concession 5 not only has Shiloh Cemetery, but it also has White/Porter Cemetery just down the road, and a little bit further you'll find Lawrence/Waddell Cemetery. However, if you are travelling in the summer months make sure you bring your bug spray, we ran into mosquitos the size of small hawks!
