Harris Burial Ground

The first thing you should know if you are planning to visit Harris Burial Ground/Susanna Moodie Home is this-you can't. It's privately owned, and as far as I can tell, very far back on the property. The cemetery is supposed to be located in the hills just south of the creek, but further research shows that there are actually no markers left on the graves, rather just two boulders.

Checking Google Maps, which I do, I can see two things that look like boulders, but they appear to be west of the creek. But they could be something completely different. The only people who know now are the property owners.

Boltus Harris and family were the first settlers in this area, and this is the first cemetery in the area. It dates back to 1797. I also found an article dating back to 1994 regarding this cemetery, and it discusses how it has basically fallen into ruin and debates whether or not the graves should be made open to the public or relocated:

If you read this blog (based on the numbers, you don't), you know my feelings about moving graves. NO! Would it be cool to open this to the public? Sure, I'd love to see it. It's a great bit of local history. Also, I think the concern about the teenagers hanging out there is a little outdated and silly. Unless the graves have wifi, kids don't care. But I can understand not wanting to allow a bunch of people to go traipsing through your property too. Hard call. Maybe they could just let me see it. I'll take a picture and I totally promise to share it with you. Fair, right?
The view of the property from the road. I hope the new owners are taking care of the cemetery, they are apparently hard-core restoring the house to its original charm.
