and
In Memory of the Baptist Pioneers of Pickering Township
Green River Baptist Church
In the late 1830's two groups of Loyal Baptists from New Brunswick and England together formed The Brunswick Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Thomas Gostick as the first pastor. After meeting in the local schoolhouse for some years the pioneers erected their own church building which was completed and dedicated on May 28, 1848. The property was donated by David and Mary Haley of New Brunswick. In 1888 the building was dismantled and moved one mile west to the village of Green River to a lot provided by Nelson Bice. At this time the old clapboard was replaced by cream coloured brick. It was completely renovated in 1951 when the widening of highway 7 necessitated the last move. The church was finally closed in 1979 as a result of the government's design to expropriate property for the proposed Pickering Airport.
"For here we have no permanent home, but we are seekers after the city which is to come" Heb 13:14
Green River Baptist Church Cemetery is located on Hwy 7 between North Rd and Sideline 28, right by the small town of Green River. The cemetery is a mix of old and new, though the last person buried here was in 1999, and I do not believe that this cemetery is accepting more burials.
The property is being maintained, somewhat, but use caution when walking the grounds. There are many partially buried monuments hidden in the somewhat long grass, some animal holes and I almost stepped on a snake. There is also a tree in the centre of the cemetery that has fallen over and it is covering at least one grave, and it appears to have been down for quite a while.
On the day I visited this cemetery I also visited Hillside Cemetery, which is reported to be haunted. This place gave me the creeps ten times more than Hillside did. The dishevelled atmosphere, the crunching autumn leaves under my boots, the fact that it is incredibly quiet for a place located on a busy road. I'll admit I checked over my shoulder more than once. I'm not interested in ghost hunting nor am I saying that this place is haunted, but if it was located int he middle of the woods I wouldn't feel too good about going in alone.
