Gilliland Cemetery

Gilliland Cemetery is located on Community Centre Road in Haldimand Township, near Cobourg, Harwood and Baltimore. There is no parking lot or laneway, you must park on the road. The plaque in the above sits at the front of the cemetery and gives a little information about the formation of this cemetery. There are a few members of the Gilliland family buried here, though there is no stone for James Gilliland himself, or it is one of the ones that aren't legible any longer (if he was actually buried here, and maybe he wasn't). John Adams, who was the first person buried here, does have a stone that is still legible.
Arch N. Thomas, died Oct 14, 1904. Aged 20 years.
Charles Thomas, died June 29, 1913. Aged 22 years.
Harriet A. Clarke, wife of George Thomas, died Mar 14, 1902. Aged 49 years.
Harry Thomas, born May 31, 1890, died June 25, 1890
George Thomas, died March 27, 1915. Aged 71 years.
A family of monuments sectioned off with fancy metal chain.
I'm focusing on the monument in the middle. In the above picture, it is on the right, chained off all alone. I can't read the name, it kind of looks like "Lottie Davie", but that is just a guess. All I can clearly make out is that she died in 1871.
The back, however, can clearly be made out:
Alice Smith, wife of George Smith, died Sept 20, 1887. Aged 30 years.
These four monuments are located in the larger chained off gravesite. They are fairly weather-worn, but a few can be somewhat made out. Read below for more info:
Frederick Thomas
Arthor Thomas (maybe, I can make out the last name, but I'm guessing on the first).
John Thomas

John Thomas, died April 3, 1841. Aged 17 years.
William Thomas, died Aug 17, 1831. Aged 3 years

Alexander Thomas, died 1864.
Frederick Thomas.

Richard Thomas
Elizabeth, wife of James Thomas, died June 28, 1883. Aged 68 years.
Another little fenced off grave site, this with only one monument. The stone is too weatherworn to read, except for the word "sacred"-could this be James Gilliland? Maybe!

Robert J. Noble, died April 5, 1851. Aged 23 years.
Mark Noble, died June 17, 1851. Aged 28 years.
Children of Alexander and Elizabeth Noble
Alexander Noble, died Aug 27, 1870. Aged 87 years. A native of Co. Fermanagh, Ireland
Elizabeth Noble, died Jan 1, 1857. Aged 75 years.
This picture is a little deceiving because it appears that the large monument is coming from this little fenced off area. It isn't. If there is a monument in here, it is completely buried in the long grass. Though this cemetery is well maintained, I think I arrived just after the lawn was mowed, but before the whipper snipper came out, and as such many of the fenced off areas remain overgrown.

John, son of Thomas and Isabella Adams, died June 29, 1832. Aged 21 years. The first person buried in this cemetery!
Rebecca Adams, died 1871.

This cemetery is a mix of pioneer and active, which means that they are currently accepting new burials, and which also means that they may be families visiting lost loved ones. As always, please be respectful when visiting.
If you are looking to visit more cemeteries close to this one you could also visit the Presbyterian Cemetery or the Academy Hill Cemetery. Both are fairly nearby.
