Pengelley's Cemetery

Pengelley's Cemetery is located at 69 Scriven Road in Bailieboro, just around the boundary line of Peterborough and Port Hope. Pengelley's is the final resting place of Joseph Scriven, whom I posted about in this blog post. You can easily spot the cemetery because there is a heritage plaque in front of the lot.
This is a beautiful little area with a great view, there is something about this place that makes me feel happy everytime I visit. Also, for some reason every time I visit my camera or phone runs out of batteries. It happened this time too, but luckily I had several spares this time.
This is the view from the road, the bushes are a little overgrown right now, but clearly, someone has started pruning them back and cleaning up the property.

And the cute little entrance gate with its pretty purple wreath.
This little, abandoned building sits off to the side of the property. It is empty, and I don't know who it originally belonged to.

Isaac Brock Pengelley, April 16 1882-June 7 1972. And his wife Katharine F.
James Sackville, 1843-1917.

James S. Pengelley, 1875-1949, and his wife M. Audrey Winton, 1800-1972
Sharon Audrey Northey, 1958-1969. Daughter of Mel and Pauline. This monument has been moved from its original location, I believe.

James Melvin Northey, Feb 9, 1963-July 4, 1984.
Frederick Paul Northey, Sept 4, 1965-July 4, 1984. Sons of Pauline and Melvin.
This is the footer for the two Northey boys.
Melvin E. Northey, 1925-2005. M. Pauline Pengelley, 1929-2015. Sharon Audrey is also listed on their monument, though she has her own monument here too (shown above).
Michael Blick Pengelley, 1927-1998. Sally Jane Pengelley, born 1933 and still with us.In the center is a little black and white cat statue.
A close up on the little cat statue.
One of the earlier gravestones here, and one of the few in poor condition. Maria A. Buscall. Died 1846.
Mary Black, died Jan 15, 1860? Aged 64 years.
Eliza Catherine, Daughter of Andrew Rochern. Died Aug 6, 1860. Aged 23 years.

Capt. R.L. Pengelley, Royal Navy. 1798-1875.
 His wife Harriet Brock, 1812-1836.
His wife Lydia Roche, 1811-1890
And the largest monument in the yard is that dedicated to Joseph Scriven, which was erected by his fanclub. I don't know what happened to his original monument.

This is a small stone with Scrivens name on it,

...and his wife, I believe. These look like markers, but not official headstones.

At the back corner of the yard is this lovely little bench,  "In Memory of Pauline Pengelley and Melvin Northey, Married Sept 15, 1951. Rest and Visit a While". You should, the view is lovely.

Bethel Cemetery-Janetville

There are plenty of "Bethel Cemeteries" out there, this one is located in/by Janetville in the Kawartha Lakes. It is right on the corner of Hwy 45 and Golf Course Rd. They've recently put a sign in front of it so it is easy to see, but prior to that, it was almost invisible. It is another abandoned pioneer cemetery, and all the monuments have been moved to one section at the back of the yard.
Montgomery- Catherine 1831-1898, John 1824-1903.

Mary Adelaide Boyd, died May 8, 1880. Aged 9 years, 8 months and 24 days.
Thomas Irvine, died Dec 23, 1873. Aged 28 years, 5 months, and 1 day.

Robert James Irvine, Jan 13, 1878-Nov 18, 1916.
Unfortunately, the top stone can't be identified. The bottom stone is Elizabeth Stinson, and I think it states she died Oct 8, 1870.
Unknown, died May 25, 1885? 25 years?
Rev. John Shannon, Wesleyan Minister, Died Sept 29, 1862. Aged 26 years.

Magahay-David Charles, died Jan 9, 1885. Aged 23 years. Also, Mary Ann, died Feb 27, 1863. Aged 3 years.
Samuel Stinson, Feb 2, 1837-Nov 9, 1912.
Jane Irvine, June 2, 1839- Aug 6, 1872 (wife)
Ann Graham, June 2, 1845-Apr 15, 1912 (wife)
Samuel Wesley, Dec 4, 1864-Apr 12, 1889 (son)

Thomas, aged 78 years.
Hannah Irvine, died may 15 1887 (maybe? It's hard to read). Aged 86 years.
All I can make out on this are the letters W.S.C. Initials? Who knows now.
Another Stinson. In person, this is probably legible, but I can't make it out from the sun's glare in the picture. Next time I am passing through I will get the exact info for this monument.

While doing some research into this cemeteryI came across this article from 2007: Bethel Cemetery. I'm guessing the issue with the road has been solved, since the Hwy is still 2 lanes and the cemetery is still there? What I found interesting is what is said about the other pioneer cemeteries int he region. Also, does anyone actually know where St. Alban's is located? I hope it still exists, I'd like to visit it.

Telford Cemetery

Telford Cemetery is located on Bury's Green Road, and I found it on the same day I stumbled upon Hilyer's Cemetery.
Telford is another abandoned pioneer cemetery, but it's in a sad state. I can't find any real information about it, and unfortunately, it has been completely destroyed over the years. It is a fairly large yard so I would think there would be more graves here, however, there are few monuments, and of the ones standing none are legible. There is a large pile of battered stones in one corner of the yard, whether or not they were parts of old monuments is unknown.
As you can see, there is a small section of monuments at the back of this yard.

A closer look at what's left.
Still intact, however no inscription that can be read.
This must have been the base for a larger monument, that or the strangest shaped one I've ever seen.
Again, unknown.

Telford Cemetery won't give you much of a glimpse into the past, but it is still an interesting stop if you are a cemetery fan, like myself. Also, for those geocachers out there, there is a cache here.

This place is already in shambles, but please remember to treat it with respect. Take only photos, leave only footprints.

Hilyer's Cemetery

The day I stumbled upon this place was a great day for cemetery searching.

I had passed Bury's Green road many times, and it always drew me in, but I never caved and took the road.  Finally, one spring day just two years ago I finally took the plunge, and I am so glad I did. Not just one interesting cemetery, not two, but a total of five cemeteries were found that day. 3 of them on Bury's Green, one on an offshoot road and the other further North the road that Bury's Green comes out on. Three of which are pioneer and abandoned cemeteries, two that are active but have old graves. Also, I almost ran over a beaver. That wasn't a good part, but still...

I can find very little information about Hilyer's Cemetery. It is located in Somerville, on Bury's Green Road. It does have a sign but blink and you'll miss it. It only has one monument, and all information I can find save one website backs that up. Ontario Abandoned Places states two graves, on that had no writing on it. I, however, think the second grave is a footstone, not an actual grave based on the lack of any inscription, size, and placement. But that's just my opinion, not historical fact.
The cemetery is a fairly large lot considering that there is only one grave here. In this picture I'm standing at the back of the cemetery, looking towards the grave. It is right by the tree line on your right-hand side. Looks like a few small boulders from here.
A closer inspection shows that it is in fact the monument, it's just been knocked over.
At the time I took these pictures the "second grave" stone was sitting beside the other monument. You can see it on the left, it's that little leaning stone.
In memory of J.W. Howard, died Oct 311884. Aged 1 year. Son of Alfred S. Hilyer.

I wish I knew more. Why is this little baby boy buried all alone out here? If he is Alfred Hilyer's son, why is his last name Howard? Where are the other Hilyers? Anyone who can tell me will be rewarded with my everlasting love.
