Old Methodist Cemetery-Grafton

The Old Methodist Cemetery is an abandoned, settler cemetery in Grafton. It is located on Aird St, at the corner of Aird and Charlotte. It sits on a small lot that is fenced at the front and has what used to be a church on the other side. The monuments have been restored and the cemetery is well taken care of, though it is a little overgrown right now due to all the rain.
A view from the front of the cemetery, note that it backs/sides onto the Grafton Inn, which is whom the gazebo belongs to.
James H. Kinney, died Oct 5, 1865. Aged 17 years, 7 months and 2 days.

Mary Hare died 1875. Aged 60 years.
Elizabeth Hare, died March 16, 1891. Aged 36 years. This monument is very intricate, and the work is lovely. I don't think I've seen this design before.
This one is lost to time, sadly.
John, son of Reuber and Jane Lawless. Died July 22, 1884. Aged 4 years. Note: There is a building in town known as the Lawless building, it has been around since this family first built it. It is currently up for sale.

Angus B. son of Susan E, McPherson, who was accidentally drowned July 25, 1863. Aged 15 years. This is unusual, because not only does it mention the cause of death, but only the mother is listed. This was back in the 1800's,.. not like being a single mother today. (Note: I am only guessing at that, I have no real information as to whether she was a single mother).

If you are in the village of Grafton, and you are interested in pioneer cemeteries (and you probably are, or why would you be reading this blog?), stop by and visit here. There is another cemetery on this street, a little further north, which is Saint Mary's cemetery. It is currently active. If you reach it, you've gone too far. There are actually at least 4 cemeteries in the main area of Grafton so you can keep yourself busy all day!

Zion United Church Cemetery

Zion United Church Cemetery sits on the corner of Zion Rd and 4th Line, in Wesleyville, Port Hope. The first Burial was in 1839, and the last was 1972. I don't believe that this is still an active graveyard since the last burial was over 40 years ago, and though the property is being maintained, many of the monuments are falling over/have fallen over/are in disrepair.

The brick building that sits beside the cemetery used to be the church, but it is now a private residence, so please stay on the cemetery grounds.

I'm going to do this cemetery in different categories: Monuments that can be clearly read, Monuments that can be partially read, and Nope, can't read these.

Monuments that can be clearly read

Mary Ann Cole, born 1836. Died Oct 30, 1910.
William Tamblyn, Aged 63 years.
(For anyone wondering, these pinky coloured stones are beautiful, and they age well, but the epitaphs often fade quickly on them if not done well, and the actual epitaphs photograph poorly due to the amount of reflection from the stone.)

Private Wilfrid R. Sunday, 7th Inf Training Battn. Nov 30, 1945

With the nest monuments, I did have to do a bit of guesswork with some names and dates, but they are mostly accurate. Monuments that can be partially read:
Mary Jane, Aug 4, 1855. 6 months and 14 days?
Hannah, Aug 16 18??
Ebeneezer Bebee, the rest is too worn to read.
Prudence
Betsy Greensway/Greennway/ Greeniway, I can't quite read it. Aged 44 years.
This is a multi-person monument, here are the ones I can read:
Maria Wragg, wife of Wm Robinson. Died March 14, 1920. Aged 89 years.
Unknown Robinson, aged 23 years.
Charles, son of George and Mary Wragg. Died Jan 12, 1882. Aged 10 years.
Joseph Wragg
John Vanstone
Mrs. Elizabeth
George Bamsey, died Mar 3, 1851. Aged 51 years. There is a second name I can't read.

Hellen? Died Aug 6, 1918.
Herbert Mulvey, died Oct 31, 1886, aged 5 years.
Isabelle, June 1828.

Nope, can't read these:
The top has Our Mother etched on it, but the rest is long gone.

Just rubble left over.
Unknown child's grave, all that gives away that it was a child is the worn down cherub on top.
Another unknown child, most likely. The lamb is usually on children's monuments.
Can't make out the name, and can't see the first name. This one could probably be restored well.
Gone back to nature.

Nothing can be read on these.
All to weather-worn to read.

As you can see there are many monuments in this yard that are illegible, however, there are many that are still in good condition. This is a great stop for anyone looking for some Wesleyville history.
